Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone will launch on October 4, confirms company.
Google’s Pixel smartphones will launch on October 4 and a new YouTube video teaser from the company confirms the upcoming event. The video shared on Google’s official YouTube channel, shows a rectangular search box taking the shape of a smartphone with the date October 4 mentioned next to it and the Google logo appearing at the end.
It’s a pretty simple and basic video as far as teasers go, because it doesn’t really reveal much other than the date, which was leaked earlier. Google is expected to ditch the Nexus branding this year, and go with the Pixel name similar to its tablets and high-end Chromebook; the two smartphones are in collaboration with HTC. Names of the new devices are Pixel and Pixel XL,with the latter getting a bigger screen.
Google’s Pixel phones have been code-named ‘Sail-fish’ and ‘Marlin’, and according to leaked benchmarks, the phones will run Android Nougat 7.1 version of the OS. Google has already started rolling out Android Nougat 7.0 to older Nexus smartphones, which is a first since usually the new OS was rolled out after new Nexus phones were launched.
Google is also reportedly planning to announce a 4K Chromecast, and the Google Home speaker as well, according to an earlier report on Android Police. Google Home Speaker was first showcased at the company’s annual I/O conference.
According to leaks, Marlin is the flagship smartphone of the two devices with a 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED display, and will run Snapdragon 821 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage space.

The Pixel smartphone will have a 5-inch display and Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 chipset. It will come with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. GFXBenchmark’s report shows the Sailfish will feature an 11MP rear camera. The primary camera will support 4K video recording. The front camera is said to be 7MP.
The Pixel devices will also see the launch of the new Pixel Launcher where the search bar is now a Google button just like the one seen on their Gboard app on iOS. Clicking on the G icon reveals the search bar. According to reports, in the new Pixel launcher the app drawer simply slides from the bottom and now five apps are shown by default in the app tray.
With October 4 event now confirmed, we’re getting ready for the Pixel launch. It also means the end of the Nexus era, which has been a much-loved brand for all Android lovers. We’ll have to see which rumours come true with the new Pixel smartphones, and if they can challenge the premium image of the iPhones and Galaxy devices.
